Curtain Measuring Guide

Taking the correct measurements in the first place is the key to a smooth, hassle-free installation. You’ll need a metal tape measure, a pencil and a ladder. And remember, all measurements need to be to the nearest millimeter, not in feet and inches.

What length should your curtains be?

The long and short of it is that it’s up to you. Floor length curtains are the most common (and the most favoured by stylists) although there’s a good argument for shorter, café-style curtains—in cafes, for instance, and sometimes in children’s rooms to avoid the curtain-as-climbing-rope scenario. The other extreme is puddling, where curtains are cut extra-long and the fabric ‘puddles’ on the floor. There’s no right or wrong, so go with what you feel.

A curtain is made to fit a track, not a window, which means getting your track measurements right is just as important as your window measurements.

Here are the measurements we need:

Width – Measure the exact width of the track.

Drop – Measure from the top of the proposed position of the track to where you want the curtain to finish. If you want a curtain shorter than floor length, then measure to where you wish the curtain to finish plus 10mm.
